Gaby Bright: eResearch Communication Manager
Gaby is managing VeRSI eResearch outreach and awareness activities. With the other members of her team, Mika Tsoi and Sarah Abramson, she is raising awareness of eResearch as an integral part of existing research methodologies. She is working towards a time when Victorian researchers will readily adopt information technology as part of their research methodologies; where eResearch will be viewed as a routine part of research.
Her role encompasses communications, outreach and training. Gaby coordinates the VeRSI public facing programs and works to ensure that VeRSI achievements are well understood by the relevant communities. Gaby is helping to establish VeRSI as a key point in the transfer of knowledge between research institutes, research groups and other bodies supporting eResearch.
Gaby trained as a physicist and she has previously worked for the Victorian State Government, in the Radiation Safety Section. Her work has included the development and execution of the Government's public awareness campaign about health issues associated with solarium use. The presentation of this work was recognized at the Australiasian Radiation Protection Society annual conference where Gaby received the award for best presentation under 35 years of age.
Gaby's postgraduate research in particle physics took her to CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research; an originator of eResearch and the birthplace of the web. Her research involved simulation and analysis of particle interactions to determine the efficiency of experiment detectors to detect these events.
During her postgraduate studies Gaby tutored biomedical physics as part of the Biomedical Science degree at Melbourne University. She was also heavily involved as a student representative on Departmental and Faculty level committees, in addition to her role as a member of the University of Melbourne Postgraduate Association (UMPA) Council.
Gaby is a member of the Victorian Branch Committee of the Australian Institute of Physics. She is Secretary of the 2010 AIP Congress Organising Committee.
