VeRSI-Monash University eResearch Coffee Network

To develop the eResearch community at Monash University, VeRSI collaborates with the Director of eResearch, Paul Bonnington, and the Monash e-Research Centre in the running of informal discussions about eResearch.

These discussions take the form of a fortnightly meeting, coffee provided, with topics identified for discussion, or a brief presentation. They are held every second Thursday at 10am. Please check the schedule below for location information. The discussions are open to anyone and we welcome Monash research and professional staff, as well as those from outside the Monash Community.

For further information or to propose a topic for discussionplease contact either Gaby Bright, the VeRSI eResearch Communications Manager, or Anthony Beitz, Technical Manager for Monash e-Research Centre.
For mailing list enquiries please email Cheryle Allan of the Monash e-Research Centre.

Sam Searle Data Management Coordinator, Monash Library
Research data management - an update on Monash University Library activities
Monash University is well underway in developing the technical infrastructure for research data, but significant cultural change is also required. Researchers' knowledge, decision-making and day-to-day practices, and the culture of their disciplines, all impact on how they manage their data. Faced with legal requirements, ethical protocols, and policy frameworks - on top of an `acronym soup' of technical options - researchers are seeking information, advice, and professional development opportunities to help them navigate this complex environment.
Working alongside the e-Research Centre, the Library's evolving approach to research data includes policy and governance structures, data management planning support, professional development for Library staff and researchers, and outreach activities. A dedicated role - Data Management Coordinator - was established in 2008 to support the work of the Library and the wider university. Sam will share her experiences in this role so far, and give an overview of activities to date as well as some challenges that are ahead.

Jim McGovern ARCS Systems Services Manager
ARCS Systems: from Grid to Cloud Computing
The ARCS Systems Services team is responsible for the operation of the ARCS Grid and development of ICT infrastructure that supports the Grid as well as broader ARCS activities. The team has also focussed on development of tools and services that make it easier to submit and monitor HPC jobs via the Grid. To this end, Grisu, a tool that provides an easy to use GUI has recently been released. In the longer term the Systems Team is working towards even easier to use web-based tools and a fully fledged ARCS Compute Cloud.

New Approaches to Data-Driven Publication in (Biomedical) Science
Publication of biomedical data has in general not kept pace with Web 2.0 internet technologies. Notable exceptions include the PLoS initiatives, but even these are based firmly on legacy scientific publishing models. In this talk I will describe some of our recent work aimed at creating new data-centric publication spaces, representing a radical departure from traditional journals. I will describe how we are doing this for one particular type of data in my own field of protein science, but will also explore how this could be possible for other data types in this and other, non-biomedical fields.
